Woodbury began in 1683 when Henry Wood, a Quaker from Bury, England, settled here; by 1715 it was a Quaker religious center, and the Friends Meeting House that rose at 120 N. Broad Street that year is the oldest public building in the city. An 1854 act incorporated Woodbury as a separate and sovereign municipality and borough with its line drawn from the Woodbury Creek bridge to the junction of the Mullica Hill and Swedesboro Roads — still the Main Street District today. Seventeen years later, in 1871, Woodbury changed its corporate charter from a borough to a city, and has held the Gloucester County seat for over two centuries; Cornwallis headquartered here during the Revolution, two miles east of the Red Bank Battlefield at Fort Mercer.

That long arc is written into the building stock. The Broad Street Historic District, designated in 1988, holds the 1765 Hunter-Lawrence House — a brick Colonial that later took a slate-covered mansard roof — beside Richardsonian Romanesque brownstone, Beaux Arts, Second Empire, Gothic Revival, Eastern Stick and Georgian work. • Woodbury Creek edge and freeze-thaw winters: Woodbury Creek crosses the north end where the 1854 boundary began at the creek bridge; low ground there is more exposed, and the humid-continental freeze-thaw cycle is hardest on slate, brownstone and stick-work detailing that does not behave like modern cladding.
