From Bakersville
to the Gateway to the Shore.

Northfield was once known as Bakersville, and the city traces its roots to farm, seaport and shipbuilding beginnings — almost 200 years of people, homes, schools and businesses by the city's own account. The Casto House it preserves dates from the earliest Bakersville days; house-historian research the city cites concludes it was probably built between 1750 and 1820, possibly by Clement Ireland, and Hosea Casto bought 4.5 acres from Ireland in 1835. The original Northfield Museum building dates from about 1915, was built as an office at Mill Road and Wabash Avenue, became the 1938 WPA-renovated library, and the long-running Mill Road School served from 1914 to 1997. Today the city presents itself as the Gateway to the Shore.
